Go Daddy Buys Media Temple

The web hosting giant GoDaddy, known for their scandalous ads and hunting CEO, have acquired a smaller, but still large, hosting company Media Temple. Media temple has been a bit of a darling in the hosting space. They always had beautiful websites, hip clients/affiliations, a slick UI for their services, and some great customer service. They came at a price though and they never captured that budget, mom and pop, customer. I used Media Temple for many years but eventually opted to switch to a cheaper service with many similar services.

GoDaddy, however, has never had a cool website, their UI is all over the place and sometimes plain impossible to use, and I’ve heard mixed things about their customer service. All that said they are one of the biggest hosts in the world, and I guess there’s a reason (probably strong and aggressive marketing). I’ve used GoDaddy for many years, mostly for client projects that had already chosen that service, and never enjoyed working with their system. While some of Media Temples customers have already threatened to leave this may not be the worst thing for them or for Media Temple. On the most optimistic level this may mean a simple injection of support and cash flow from GoDaddy into (mt). Their blog posts and emails have stated they would remain an autonomous company and continue to provide a consistent level of service and support to their customer base. Whether they actually mean this remains to be seen. On a not so optimistic level, this may mean the slow demise of a pretty cool hosting company.

The silver lining here is this is an opportunity for smaller companies to step up and fill a possible new void and provide high quality hosting for web people and creatives with solid UI’s and great customer service.
