iPhone 5S and 5C

iPhone 5 update

The 5C

iPhone 5C

The 5C is basically what we expected, an iPhone 5 with a plastic body. The body looks solid and well made, but it’s a little funny how Apple can make 180’s from bashing plastic body phones to making their own and calling it “beautifully and unapologetically plastic”, and “meaningful”. This is definitely targeted to a younger audience and could make some real headway with parents opting for a cheaper phone for their teenagers at $99 with a contract.

The 5C case, in all it’s holey glory, is not exactly the epitome of product design. This was a miss, but Apple was never great at making cases (looking at you, bumper).

The 5S

iPhone 5S

The 5S looks almost exactly like the 5 with a slightly different colour palette. The colours are, well, boring. Even the new black model is a washed out version of the 5, and the gold version not exactly striking in any way. This is the first time the white looks the best to me, which may be intentional as iOS7 looks best on white devices and has been promoted almost exclusively with a white device.

The fingerprint scanner is nice from a time saving point of view, who doesn’t hate entering their four digit passcode 20 times a day? We will have to see if it actually works as advertised. Many other tech companies have included fingerprint scanners in their computers and phones and all failed miserably. The missed opportunity here is not turning the ring around the home button into a notification light. Imagine, something to let you know you have a notification. Wouldn’t that be nice? Maybe you could set different colours for different apps, blue for twitter, green for messages etc. Going even further with the idea, imagine you were downloading a movie or album from iTunes and turned off your screen, the round light could turn into a progress bar and when full you would know your download was complete.

The iPad

The one thing I thought might happen today was the announcement of an iPad mini 2 with retina display. The mini really needs this update as the screen doesn’t look amazing, especially when compared to the competition, or even the newer iPads.

Update: Latest generation mini’s now come equipped with those gorgeous retina displays, no need to worry any longer.
